About

My name is Sharon and I’m the mom of two active youngsters.  My husband and I love to watch our children learn about new things and often WE end up learning a few things as well.  I created this site to help other parents with their homeschooling journey, specifically those who are on the fence about beginning homeschooling.  It often appears like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be.  I do my best to keep a laid-back attitude and when something doesn’t work the way I planned I just try something different.

I think this web site will be extremely helpful to those new in homeschooling as well as any homeschool group.

    Sharon,
I’m Anne Chancey Dalton, and I totally support Homeschools even though I was a public school classroom teacher for 26 years. Twenty of those were in Mobile County. My husband and I now live in Clanton, AL to care for his 92-year-old mother. We love it here, but I still consider Mobile home.

I’m the author of 4 books–2 historical fiction about AL history, a coloring book with text on a 1-2 grade level and a biography of Admiral Jeremiah Denton from Mobile. When I do author visits to libraries, I often have homeschoolers present. I’d also like to do author visits to homeschool groups.

I’ve compiled a list of cover schools in Mobile which is a combination of your list and HomeSchool World: Alabama. I’ll be glad to send the list to your email, if you will send it to me. Or I could try putting it on this Leave a Reply, however it is fairly long.

Hi Anne, it’s nice to “meet” you. The list in HomeSchool World is a bit outdated and some of the coverings listed in the Mobile area no longer exist, while others aren’t listed at all. There are many homeschooling families in Mobile county. Most of us stay connected through Facebook groups for field trips and events. Feel free to e-mail me at: goatspots@gmail.com

      Thanks,
      Sharon

if my daughter is doing an on-line homeschool curriculum does she have to be enrolled in a church cover/umbrella school as well? We live in Mobile Alabama.

Yes Tracy. An online homeschool curriculum is just curriculum. Alabama State Law requires every child from age 6-17 to be enrolled in public school or a “church school”. There are many cover schools to choose from in the Mobile area, or you can choose a state-wide cover school.
Whether you choose a local cover school or a state-wide cover school, be sure to connect with local homeschooling families through online facebook groups such as “Free 2 Homeschool” or “South Alabama Homeschooling”. These groups are where you’ll find out about field trips, clubs, fun parties and group events going on all year long. The events are open to everyone who homeschools in the Mobile/Baldwin counties area.

Hi Sharon! Would it be okay to add the Alabama Homeschool Expo as a listing on your blog? The site is http://www.alabamahomeschoolexpo.com. It is an annual convention in Montgomery in June. 🙂
